UPDATED MAY 28, 2020: The NCAA has voted to extend its dead period across all DI sports through July 31.
Due to concerns over the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic, the NCAA has suspended in-person recruiting visits in accordance with their ‘Dead Period’ rules across all DI sports through at least April 15 July 31, and will reassess the situation as that suspension deadline approaches.
The good news is, this does not affect your ability to contact coaches online or over the phone.
What ‘dead period’ means:
According to NCAA.org, during a dead period, “a college coach may not have face-to-face contact with college-bound student-athletes or their parents, and may not watch student-athletes compete or visit their high schools. Coaches may write and telephone student-athletes or their parents during a dead period”.
What college coaches cannot do during this dead period:
- Conduct in-person official and unofficial recruiting visits or meetings
- Watch student-athletes compete or visit their high schools
What college coaches can do during this dead period:
- Communicate with student-athletes or their parents via email, phone calls, written letters, and social media
What athletes and parents can do during this dead period:
- BE PROACTIVE: Communicate with college coaches via email, phone calls, written letters, and social media.
- If you have an in-person visit scheduled, check in with that coach immediately and find an alternative way to connect.
How this dead period impacts your recruiting process:
Don’t panic! This does not mean athletes and parents cannot make progress on recruiting – this just suspends in-person recruiting visits. This is, in fact, a great moment to block off some time to work through things like building your college list, compiling video footage, or writing messages to coaches at the schools you’re interested in to introduce yourself.
